Lauren flew out to Los Angeles on the 1st of July 2004, where she will be receiving vocal training for one month. Her tuition fees, traveling costs and accommodation are sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture and the famous designer Christiaan Ras, who has undertaken to clothe her for the rest of her career, sponsors all her clothing.
On the day of this interview, Lauren was extremely exited about going to Los Angeles. She realizes that this is huge opportunity and an honour. In her own words: “I am taking this opportunity with both hands and using it!”
Background
Lauren grew up in the small township of Davidsonville
in Gauteng. One of two children, she was raised by her
mother, a single parent. Despite difficult financial circumstances,
her mother always supported both children fully.
At age 12, Lauren was sent to a special remedial school for children with learning difficulties. Her schoolteacher, Ms Sannie van der Merwe, saw her pupil’s exceptional vocal talent and started exposing her to eisteddfods and talent competitions. Ms van der Merwe was also the one to introduce her to her current vocal coach, Ms Rita Joubert, who took Lauren on as one of her students.
Lauren practices her voice for at least 3 hours a day. Exercises include voice warming and then a rehearsal of all her songs every day.
Achievements
-
At age 14, she was entered into the Arté Cantare talent competition and won the overall Gospel section.
-
2001 – participated in the South African Championships for the Performing Arts and received 2 silver and 3 bronze medals.
-
2002 – participated in Idols, where she reached the Top 50.
-
2003 – Won 4 gold and 2 silver medals in the South African Championships for the Performing Arts and was selected for Team SA. She participated at the World Championships for Performing Arts in Los Angeles and won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. She also received the Overall Trophy for World Music.
-
2004 – Won 3 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medal at the South African Championships for the Performing Arts and was selected for Team SA to participate at the World Championships in August 2004.
Inspiration
Her biggest inspiration comes from her mother, because she “never said die”, despite any difficulties that life put her way. She has always fully supported Lauren in all her undertakings.
As far as celebrities go, Lauren’s greatest inspiration comes from Tina Turner, because of her endurance. Tina Turner only started her career at age 40. This fact only proves that one must never give up on one’s dreams.
What does the future hold?
Lauren fully intends to pursue a career in the Performing Arts and to achieve this, she wants to study in music theatre and arts.
Her advice to all aspiring singers is simple: “Don’t give up your dreams. Although they sometimes look far, they áre reachable – don’t quit, persevere! And practice, practice, practice!”
For this once in a lifetime opportunity Lauren expresses her sincere thank you to the following people:
-
Her mother Julia, for all her support;
-
Ellen Roux, for this huge opportunity and that she saw her potential;
-
Rita Joubert, her vocal coach;
-
Sannie van der Merwe, her schoolteacher;
-
Oom Japie;
-
Ria van Heerden;
-
Oom Frik;
-
Vincent Duchenne;
-
